The "New Math"

Recently was talking to a retired school teacher friend who told me how "helpless" she felt about her former profession and for her students in the last few years of her profession. She no longer believed in the "school system" and of its goals - to instruct! She told me how "the system" slowly evolved into something of a nightmare and into something a bit sinister over the course of a few years! She woke up one day and said "no more", she just couldn't continue pulling her students into this nightmare. Thinking perhaps this was just her own opinion, I talked with a few other teachers that I know, from a few social sites, and they too were feeling some of these same issues. The system was growing and taking over! They each felt the "children" of this generation were being indoctrinated rather than taught all under the guise of "progressivism". You will have to understand the term "progressivism to understand how they felt. Teaching was becoming robotic, and structured to teach a way of life, how others believed, rather then how to live their own lives. I then heard from a recent graduate whos sole desire in her life was to follow in the footsteps of her mother and her aunt, former teachers. She had been excited to dedicate her life to the teaching profession and to actually get to teach kids. She grew up hearing of their love for teaching and how they were making lasting memories for themselves and their students. Education to them was deemed healthy, however she began to recall how, in the last few years of their teaching years, things were "changing" and they too were losing a bit of hope and desire. Then, as she continued her "on-the-job" training and transition, she noticed and stated emphatically, that her desires were slowly being shredded to pieces. She had trained to be a teacher, entrusted by society to teach children and now her dreams were being shattered by the "system" that was training her to indoctrinate rather than instruct. I'm sure some of you are aware of the buzz words or phrases, "new Math, no cursive writing, think as I think" ideas that are being talked and written about in the news, social media and around the break-rooms of our nation. Well, these are true, but that's not the whole of the matter - they are spreading and our kids are the Guiney Pigs - not just in "talk" but in our classrooms. The teachers that I talked with felt this was happening and at an alarming rate. There is more to this story and something I want to investigate further, if not for me, but absolutely for my grandkids sake! (More to follow)

Taxes

This morning as I turned on the TV set on my way to make coffee, a national ( CNN:HLN Channel) news segment had apparently earlier asked its viewers to write in and tell them who "they would raise taxes on if they had the ability to do so". I'm paraphrasing now but here is how it was played out: One person wrote in and said, "raise taxes on the big oil companies but do it APPROPRIATELY". This individual's email actually had the word APPROPRIATELY spelled in capital letters. The second individual wrote in and said, "raise taxes on the junk food companies because they make food taste good which forces us to eat it and yet it is bad for us".  (They will one day raise prices on Junk Food, mark my words!) Honest, i'm not making this up!!!!! As to the first writer, i'm ASSUMING (I capitalized this word to make a point too) they think raising taxes APPROPRIATELY would not effect the average consumer - ergo, their use of the CAPS! In o...

The Lawyer Vs the Entrepreneur

I have been mulling this thought over for some time now and feel it needs to be put to pen. Ever wonder how many of our elected officials in Washington were real entrepreneurs before seeking your vote? I wasn't really sure, but I had my own opinion! Well, most are lawyers. To be an entrepreneur or to want to become one takes a drive that not all individuals have. Long tedious hours, broke one moment rich the next - then broke perhaps again - then having to make the payroll, paying bills, wondering if you're going to make it, re-wondering, thinking rethinking, etc. Hard life! Entrepreneurs are almost like the everyday married couple I guess; long hours, being broke one moment a little money the the next - then broke perhaps again, paying bills. Takes a rare breed to be successful at being married and/or an entrepreneur. The exhilaration of success is ONE driver that surely inspires and keeps a person going in business. Bottom line is that it takes a deep abiding drive, i...
