Taxes

This morning as I turned on the TV set on my way to make coffee, a national (CNN:HLN Channel) news segment had apparently earlier asked its viewers to write in and tell them who "they would raise taxes on if they had the ability to do so". I'm paraphrasing now but here is how it was played out:

One person wrote in and said, "raise taxes on the big oil companies but do it APPROPRIATELY". This individual's email actually had the word APPROPRIATELY spelled in capital letters.

The second individual wrote in and said, "raise taxes on the junk food companies because they make food taste good which forces us to eat it and yet it is bad for us".  (They will one day raise prices on Junk Food, mark my words!)

Honest, i'm not making this up!!!!!

As to the first writer, i'm ASSUMING (I capitalized this word to make a point too) they think raising taxes APPROPRIATELY would not effect the average consumer - ergo, their use of the CAPS! In other words, they only want to raise taxes on the individuals that ACTUALLY own the oil companies. Us AVERAGE consumers would not be the ones who would pay more taxes. What a novel thinker we have out there.

As to the second email. I want to get this one just straight as I take a sip on my coffee with hazelnut creamer and take a bite of chocolate zucchini bread (hey, its got one daily unit of vegetable). Apparently, this twinkie hater also feels that by taxing big business in no way would effect us, the AVERAGE consumer. You can bet both individuals were looking out for our interests - I feel so comforted!

If only we did that to all the other big business owners, we consumers would never be taxed.

Its bad enough to think taxing others, in these cases big bad business, lest we be taxed, is best. I have high ambitions of starting a business, I can tell you this: It won't be one that makes deep fried twinkies or anything closely related to one that produces gas.

What's worse, this network and reporter, felt these individual's emails were important enough to put on national TV. What were they thinking?

What's even worse on my part is to have actually turned on the TV set, watched this segment and then felt the need write a BLOG. What was I thinking....?

  1. Sometimes I cannot even bear to turn on the TV because of the stupidity that is broadcast. As Nathaniel and I watch the news, we will hear a "story blurb" and then he usually turns to me and says in his "yeah right" tone..."Now THAT was important news!"

  2. While the movie 'Idiocracy' will never be regarded as a good movie, watch the first 5-10 minutes of this film and try to tell me there isn't a little bit of truth to it. The unfortunate fact is that STUPIDITY sells.

  3. Isn't that economics 101? Big companies don't take pay cuts. Raise the big corporate tax 5%, the price of your favorite snack (twinkies?) just went up by that much. Your local grocer MIGHT try and absorb some of this cost, but Hostess?! No way. Not trying to be a know-it-all, but these seems somewhat basic and our brightest minds don't know or can't figure this out? Sounds more like B.S. spin to me. What the American public doesn't know/ realize, won't hurt them. Thanks again Barack. Oh, wheres that check!?

  4. Not only does STUPIDITY sell, it is sadly exploited; most often the exploitation comes by those that oft feel superior. As to movies, I laugh along with most others for many reasons. However, most news reports nowadays are driven by sales, salaries, and success rather than what they should reporting; news-makers have lost touch. And, if you tell someone something long eventually they will believe you. I'm sure you also know and understand news-makers present day aversion to telling the truth - that sells as well! Thanks!

The Lawyer Vs the Entrepreneur

I have been mulling this thought over for some time now and feel it needs to be put to pen. Ever wonder how many of our elected officials in Washington were real entrepreneurs before seeking your vote? I wasn't really sure, but I had my own opinion! Well, most are lawyers. To be an entrepreneur or to want to become one takes a drive that not all individuals have. Long tedious hours, broke one moment rich the next - then broke perhaps again - then having to make the payroll, paying bills, wondering if you're going to make it, re-wondering, thinking rethinking, etc. Hard life! Entrepreneurs are almost like the everyday married couple I guess; long hours, being broke one moment a little money the the next - then broke perhaps again, paying bills. Takes a rare breed to be successful at being married and/or an entrepreneur. The exhilaration of success is ONE driver that surely inspires and keeps a person going in business. Bottom line is that it takes a deep abiding drive, i...
